SOUNDTRACK & SCORING

Because of the youngful demographic to which SCORE is targeted, IFR expects SCORE! to score well through ancillary channels as cable/network  television, DVD sales, merchandise licensing.  A  key component in this after-theater / after-market mix can be a movie sountrack CD, compiled from the film’s soundtrack.

Currently, successful soundtracks are compilations of songs which have been previously released... and were themselves hits.  There are exceptions, though they are rare and reflect the strength of the movie and the performing artists.

The promotion of a feature film is a marketing system; and, like all systems, the success of one component, such as the popular soundtrack, affects the overall popularity of the feature film itself... especially in DVD/Video sales.

The below table illustrates recent feature film soundtrack album hits... and misses!

Compiling a winning soundtrack "sounds" easy in hindsight; but, it is not so moving forward. As the above chart illustrates, the number of units sold vary greatly... and the revenues back to the production company and investors varies based upon the arrangements negotiated with the artist, label, or other entity controlling the music rights.  Often, despite finding the "perfect song for the scene" a producer's acquiring the tune(s) is prohibitively expensive, thus providing no reason return to film's investors to which the producer has a responsibility.

There are scenarios, with differing risk/rewards to be considered:

Find... a record label finance the album resulting in a straight royalty rate ranging from approximately 3% upwards.

Structure... a partnership and license with a willing record label resulting in a partnership arrangement less the usual fees.

Create... compelling original tunes, use unsigned bands, and promote all through placement in the film and promotions before and after release.
